Snakes
Snakes are specialized animals with elongated bodies and no legs. They have no ears or eyelids, but transparent scales cover the eyes. Also, they have a long, forked tongue, which aids the sense of smell. Common types of snakes we encounter are Black Racers, Water Snakes, Rat Snakes, Pigmy Rattle Snakes and the Cotton Mouth. Generally, snakes live in cool, damp, dark areas where prey is available. Areas around the home that are attractive to snakes include piles of firewood, old lumber, flower beds with heavy mulch and gardens. Most of Florida's snake feed on small rodents, small birds, insects and other snakes. One of the main problems with snakes in Florida is that some are venomous. Though they do not actively hunt humans or pets, the chance of accidently getting bit is a very real possibility.
